Building a resilient catchment together

We are very lucky to be able to enjoy the waterways of East Gippsland through boating, camping and fishing.

From the Gippsland Lakes to the rivers in the High Country and in the Far East, there are some truly magical places to venture.

The East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has worked alongside agencies, community groups, and individuals for more than 25 years to improve and preserve local waterways, achieving great results.

Projects aim to boost the resilience of our catchments and waterways, ensuring they can support a diverse number of flora and fauna, provide enjoyable recreational activities and maintain a healthy environment for everyone in the community.

Some of the work includes weed control, revegetation with native plant species and efforts to strengthen riverbanks and improve habitats for native species such as fish and platypus.

Involving the community is a priority for the East Gippsland CMA and events they’ve held throughout the year include paddles, boat trips and community meetings.

They bring everyone together to enjoy the region and provide opportunities for individuals to connect, share experiences and collaborate on initiatives that benefit the local environment.

“We can all play a part in looking after our waterways, and while you’re out there enjoying the sites boating, camping and fishing be sure to pick up after yourself and leave no trace, this way everyone can enjoy our waterways and catchments now and for years to come,” East Gippsland CMA chief executive officer, Bec Hemming said.

The East Gippsland CMA will continue working with its partners and community on a whole of catchment approach to ensure every aspect of local waterways are considered.
