Exercise in leashed areas

by Bairnsdale Advertiser

in Local News

Dog owners in East Gippsland now have a choice in how they exercise and socialise their pets following the declaration of two off-leash areas by East Gippsland Shire Council.

The declared areas are at 68 Giles Street, Bairnsdale, which is part of the rehabilitated former Bosworth Road landfill, and 43 Palmers Road, Lakes Entrance near the Lakes Entrance Aquadome.

The move follows requests from residents for off-leash areas. Council had also undertaken community consultation to understand the level of support for the idea from the wider community, including people without dogs.

Mayor, Cr Natalie O’Connell, said council understood many dog owners wanted the opportunity to let their dog run freely.

“I expect these off-leash areas will be popular with residents. The sites are not only for dog owners, but other users need to understand they may encounter unrestrained dogs,” Cr O’Connell said.

“It is hoped providing these off-leash areas will reduce the instances of owners letting their dogs off-lead in other areas.”

There are still a number of common sense rules that need to be followed in the off-leash areas.

Owners must have voice or hand control over the dog and carry a chain, cord or leash to bring the dog under control and must not allow the dog to rush at or threaten a person or animal.

Dog owners should also be aware that sometimes their dog may find an off-leash park to be confronting if attended at a popular time and a long walk on leash could be more beneficial for them.

Owners are reminded that, unless in an off-leash area, dogs need to be on a chain, cord or leash at all times when outside the owner’s property.

Owners also need to carry a bag or container to collect dog droppings and must pick up after their dog.

Penalties may apply if owners are found to be breaking these laws.
