In an unexpected turn of events, Lindenow South Primary School will remain open, despite last week’s announcement it would close.
After meeting with Deputy Premier and education minister, Ben Carroll, on Tuesday, local MP, Tim Bull, was told the school would stay open.
“We can confirm that the Department of Education is recruiting a new leader to ensure continuity for students at Lindenow South Primary School,” a Department of Education spokesperson said.
“We’ve still got a bit of detail that we need to work through, but the great news is students will be able to now attend that school at the start of term two,” Mr Bull said.
“We’ll make sure that there are some longer term solutions put in place to ensure that it’s operating well into the future.”
The initial decision to close Lindenow South Primary School from the start of term two caused anger and upset in the local community, with the news coming as a complete surprise to parents, who received a phone call from the school last Thursday (March 27) notifying them the school would close on Friday, April 4, giving them only days to find a new school for their children.
Parents, Peter and Naomi Carpinteri, moved from Melbourne to the area and said they had been blindsided by the decision.
“We actually chose the school (Lindenow South Primary School) our child would go to before we had decided where we were going to live,” Mr Carpinteri said.
The school has been welcoming students for more than 130 years, with eight generations of one family passing through its doors.
