Wy Yung made numerous changes to its line up that defeated Lakes Entrance the previous week, but still made short work of Paynesville in round seven of the East Gippsland Football Netball at Bullumwaal Road last Saturday.
Notable absentees for the Tigers included Norm Betts, Nate Somerville, Tom Stephenson and Tim Daniel, but they still outclassed the hapless Gulls to the tune of 110 points.
It was Paynesville’s sixth defeat of more than 100 points for the season, and their second smallest, only eclipsed by their round four 106 points hammering by Lakes Entrance.
The Tigers quickly put their paw print on the contest kicking seven goals to one in the first quarter, with Jack Betts (five goals) again presenting an attractive leading option in the forward 50.
The Gulls defended bravely in the second term. Although unable to assert any scoreboard pressure, they did manage to restrict the rampant Tigers to just three majors.
Wy Yung was dominating through the midfield with co-captains Jock Overend (two) and Harry Kellow (two) leading the way,
Josh Broome and Jet Murphy just as effective, the latter continuing to impress spectators and opposition coaches with his style
of play.
Tom Betts was giving plenty of run of half back, a role he has impressed with for several seasons, but he has certainly gone to another level this season.
Jack Halbut was busy on centre wing while Luke Elia (three), coach Brodie Anderson (two) and Brad Daniel (two) always looked dangerous when the ball was in the Wy Yung offensive arc.
Paynesville continued to put in maximum effort, but the Gulls were again comprehensively outplayed as Wy Yung kicked nine goals to two in a second half where the game reached no great heights.
Despite being defeated comfortably each week, morale still appears to be strong at Paynesville with more than 40 players on the track last Thursday night with players missing out on a game in the reserves.
Established senior players Ben McKinnon, Mitchell Willmott, Harry Gibbs, Jordan Farquhar and Jordan Dadswell were all among the better players for
the Gulls.
After the competition bye over the King’s Birthday long weekend, Paynesville will welcome Lindenow to AJ Freeman Reserve, the Cats high on morale after posting their first victory last Saturday.
The Tigers will be looking to move into the top two when they welcome Stratford to Bullumwaal Road, though the Swans will be keen to bounce back
after suffering their first defeat of the season last Saturday at the hands of the unbeaten Lucknow.
