Bairnsdale Football Netball Club, take a bow.
The local sporting club has again led the FightMND fundraising charge with its annual Big Freeze event smashing all previous records last Saturday by contributing $162,595 (and counting) to tackle
Motor Neurone Disease.
The group of more than 20 brave sliders took the plunge, again dressed outstandingly led by Pope Frank Desio (pictured), who at the time of printing yesterday was the leading fundraiser with a remarkable $23,933, closely followed by Kaitlyn Mathers less than $400 behind.
The team from A Kick in the Bush had ticked over the $10,000 mark, while local identity Ross Heath had helped generate more than $13,000.
Club president Mick Mann said “we are
constantly amazed by the generosity of the East Gippsland community”.
“To again surpass the target we set speaks volumes about the residents and businesses that call East Gippsland home,” he said.
“Supporting FightMND to beat the beast is such
a worthy cause.
“We are so grateful for the way everyone supports our event and feel privileged as a club to be a vehicle for the community to come together.”
Every slider was able to generate more than $1000 to the cause as Bairnsdale Football Netball Club continually moved its goal line. The club initially aimed to raise $100,000, however once that goal was achieved prior to Saturday’s event, the target became $130,000. With that soon passed again the club aimed higher at $150,000, which has been blown out of the water.
Of the many teams taking part in the FightMND fundraiser, Bairnsdale has literally blown all out of the water, surpassing the efforts of Big Freeze Geelong by more than $50,000. More photos pages 10 and 11.
