The Rotary Club of Bairnsdale Sunrise is planning to build a Bike and Mobility Education Track at Tulaba Park, Eastwood, adjacent to Lucknow Primary School, and to kickstart fundraising, it is hosting A Masquerade Winter Gala at Eastwood Club, Lucknow, on June 21 the first weekend of the East Gippsland Winter Festival.
“Having carried out research with schools, the East Gippsland Active Transport Group, cycling clubs and local organisations, we realised that there was a complete lack of up to date and safe venues in East Gippsland Shire to allow (children and those with mobility scooters) training and enable them to practise on a suitable track with line-markings and road signage,” club president Clare Marriot-Smith said.
“The Active Transport Group has a number of trained educators who struggle to find an adequate training space.
“The need to improve safety for young cyclists and those with scooters is apparent on our increasingly busy roads. With greater phone and computer usage in the young, we want to encourage people of all ages to become more active and stay fit and improve their mental health. At present there is no facility in the district for those on mobility scooters to practise and improve their skills.
“Our Rotary Club of Bairnsdale Sunrise received a Smarty Grant from East Gippsland Shire Council to develop plans and run community engagement. To
date there is significant interest and very positive feedback.”
