Wy Yung moved to second on the East Gippsland Football Netball League, overwhelming a persistent Lindenow in the second half at Bullumwaal Road last Saturday during round 10 of East Gippsland football.
The Cats were up and about early, bucking the trend of being slow starters in 2025, which has too often left them having to revert to chasing.
They kicked four goals in the opening term to open up an 11-point advantage at the first break with both Peter Harrison (two goals) and Pat Alexander (two) looking dangerous.
A real arm wrestle developed in the second term with both half backlines seeing plenty of football as the game often became kick-to-kick.
Lindenow struggled to score, remaining goalless while Tigers had opportunities but they couldn’t get the ball through the bigger posts.
Coach Brodie Anderson (four), Brad Daniel (two) and co-captain, Harry Kellow (two) looked dangerous when chances came but the Cats where stoic and defended like their lives depended on it.
Lindenow still had the lead at half time but it was back to four points, the Wy Yung train finally getting rolling in the third term with the home side kicking three goals to one to seize the lead.
The Tigers rammed the advantage home in the final term booting seven goals to four to run out impressive 30-point winners.
Coach Brodie Anderson was happy to get the four points after a hiccup the previous week at Orbost, while Cats coach Brett Waddell was left to his rue his side’s inability to put together four solid quarters.
Among the best for the Tigers were Jett Murphy, Jack Halabut, co-captain Jock Overend, Daniel, Max Rowe and the hard-running Tom Betts.
The Cats got great service from the hard-working defenders Norm Barry, Daniel Reid and Cooper Shaw, the consistent Lachy Carroll, prodigious talent Peter Harrison and Waddell.
Lindenow will face another tough assignment this week when it takes on Lucknow at the Lucknow Recreation Reserve, the Cats more than capable of claiming a big scalp if they
can put together four solid quarters.
Wy Yung will head to Boisdale to take on the Bombers on a ground which doesn’t suit either side which might make for an interesting afternoon of football.
