A team of seven expert spinners and knitters from the East Gippsland Wool and Craft Group participated in the Back-to-Back Wool Challenge last weekend.
In a race against the clock, a blade shearer sheared a sheep, the wool was spun and a jumper was knitted all in the same day.
The East Gippsland Wool and Craft Group has competed in this international challenge in previous years and took first place in Australia in 2007 (second place internationally) with a time of six hours, 10 minutes, eight seconds.
Australia previously held the Guinness World Record for this event up until 2017 when the Netherlands beat the record by less than six minutes for a time of four hours, 45 minutes 53 seconds.
A situation whereby the sheep soiled its own fleece compromised the team’s time this year, but a jumper was produced by the end of the day.
The event held at Liz Green Arts in Bairnsdale raised nearly $300 for Annie’s Cottage in Bairnsdale in support of children living with terminal illness.
