Gun owners will be required to lock-up their firearms in a purpose built, commercially manufactured gun safe in the coming weeks.
From August 30, several changes to firearm storage laws will come into effect.
Guns must be stored in a lockable purposed-built steel storage container.
The steel must be at least 1.6 millimetres thick to comply with Australian/New Zealand standards.
If the container weighs less than 150 kilograms when it is empty, then it must be bolted to the structure of the premises.
It must also have a sturdy lock, and be locked, when the firearm is stored inside.
Firearms officer for the East Gippsland and Wellington Shire areas, Leading Senior Constable Stuart Jones, said Victoria Police place great emphasis on firearm safekeeping.
