Premiership contender Wy Yung rounded off its finals preparation with a 98-point demolition of Lindenow in round 17 of the East Gippsland Football Netball League at the Lindenow Recreation Reserve.
Such was the ease and execution of the victory, they made the Cats look second-rate, a side that has been a genuine improver
in 2025 and was searching for its fourth win in succession.
The Tigers were out of the blocks, kicking five goals to two in the opening term, leading by 23 points at the first change, and certainly weren’t intent on idling through to finals action, playing ruthless football ramming home 17 goals to five in the final three quarters, as they focused on maintaining the intensity and sticking to their game plan.
The Tigers of 2025 have plenty of avenues to goal, which could be crucial in the coming weeks, if their midfield can get on top of premiership favourite Lucknow and create plenty of opportunities.
This week, Jack Betts cashed in with five, Brad Daniel continued his great form heading to the finals, slotting four, as did co-captain Harry Kellow, taking his season total to 47.
Kellow has had another outstanding season, his ability to pinch hit in the midfield makes him difficult to match up.
If the Tigers are afforded the luxury of being able to play Kellow and the freakishly talented Nathan Dennison in the forward
50 in the coming weeks, they are going to
be hard to beat.
The Cats battled hard but were simply no match for a well-oiled Tiger outfit, looking to be close to the peak of their powers as they commence their first finals campaign under first-year coach, Brodie Anderson, another player who is capable of bobbing up and
kicking a bag full of goals if the ball bounces his way.
Among the best for the winners were hard-running half-back Tom Betts, co-captain Jock Overend, Daniel, consistent midfielder Jett Murphy, who has impressed all and sundry in his first season at Bullumwaal
Road and hard-working defenders, Ridge Peters and Nate Somerville, but they had plenty of mates.
Lindenow got good output from Norman Barry, Justin Gould, coach Brett Waddell, consistent defender Lucas Lakay, Rohan Blandford and giant ruckman Alexander Stanton, who continues to develop with matches under his belt.
It’s certainly not all doom and gloom for the Cats, who have been successful five times this season, after only winning two games last season, while not having the best luck with injuries, with several of their key recruits spending considerable time out of the side.
Wy Yung looks the most obvious choice to push Lucknow, who have looked the side to beat all season, with things looking to be falling into place just nicely at Tigerland, time will tell if it’s their year.
