Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH) is excited to announce that Bairnsdale-based mixed medium artist Tracey Solomon will be joining the celebrations for its 50th anniversary, bringing her whimsical flair to a community chalk-art installation.
The installation will be part of GLCH’s family fair at its Jemmeson Street site, taking place on Saturday, October 11.
The public is invited to help Tracey transform the footpath into a vibrant display using chalk and pastels, with the theme ‘flower power and vines’ with the 1970s an inspiration.
GLCH opened in 1975, and elements of the free community event draw on the 70s for inspiration, including free exercise dance classes, a photo booth and this interactive community artwork.
They’ll also be a historical display indoors, showcasing photos and memories that have shaped the community health journey.
Tracey, who has been a fixture of the East Gippsland arts scene for the past 11 years, is no stranger to community-based projects.
After transitioning from a career as a mortgage broker to focus on her creative passion, Tracey has worked across multiple mediums, including photography, painting and large-scale murals.
“I enjoy projects with an interactive element, because it means the community is involved and you can create something and be part of something, even if you don’t have artistic ability – anyone can be involved,” Tracey said.
One of the lead artists for this year’s East Gippsland Winter Festival, Tracey was responsible for the popular rat and turtle sculptures showcased during the Lakes Lights event. For the footpath project at GLCH, she will use both chalk and pastels to create a piece that is playful and engaging.
“The pastels bring the artwork to life with vibrant colour, making it really stand out, but I also love the temporary nature of the installation. It’s here for a limited time, and once it’s gone, it’s gone,” Tracey explained.
This chalk-art installation will not only celebrate GLCH’s milestone anniversary but also offer the local community an opportunity to engage with the arts in a unique and accessible way. The event promises to be a fun, interactive experience for people of all ages, showcasing East Gippsland creativity.
The GLCH 50th Anniversary Family Fun Fair is on Saturday, October 11 in the Jemmeson Street carpark from 11am – 3.30pm.
Entry is free and all are welcome.
