The Make-A-Wish Australia East Gippsland Volunteer Branch is celebrating another success after its second trivia night of the year, held on September 11 at the Bairnsdale Bowls Club.
The sell-out event drew more than 100 guests and raised just shy of $3400 to help grant life-changing wishes for critically ill children.
Friendly rivalries filled the room as teams battled it out across six rounds.
The Hopeful Hawks claimed victory, with Mixed Veg close behind, while Brain Waves proudly added another wooden spoon to their growing collection. Raffle prizes donated by generous local businesses added to the fun, with plenty of winners throughout the night.
The trivia night capped off what has been a big year of fundraising for the branch. Earlier events included the first trivia night in March, a Mother’s Day raffle in April, and the annual Hungry Jack’s Wishmaker appeal in June. Thanks to the Bairnsdale store and the local community, the national campaign raised a record $2.7 million through the sale of Wishmaker stars.
But for volunteers, the real reward lies in seeing children’s wishes come true.
In July, five-year-old East Gippsland boy Billy received his wish for a backyard play haven. His dream space now includes a giant trampoline, climbing frame, cubby, sandpit, enclosed swing, basketball ring, and personalised touches like his own basketball and sandpit digger.
“Deciding on a wish is such a big step,” local Wish team leader, Brenda Pincott, said.
“But seeing Billy grinning from ear to ear as he plays on his new equipment makes all the effort worthwhile.”
The wish was closely followed by the branch’s Christmas in July luncheon at the Mitchell River Tavern, which drew 89 guests for a festive day of raffles, quizzes, and a lolly jar guessing competition. A special video from the St Kilda Football Club celebrating another wish added to the magic, with the event raising more than $2000.
“Our Christmas in July event was a lot of
fun, with everyone getting into the festive spirit of the day,” fundraising coordinator,
Bev Sinclair, said.
“We’re proud of what our small branch achieves each year. With the help of our supporters, these funds make a real difference by turning more wishes like Billy’s into reality.”
Bev herself was recently recognised for 15 years of service to Make-A-Wish. Having served in many roles, including branch president, she said she loves being part of Make-A-Wish.
“There’s nothing like seeing the pure happiness on a child’s face when their wish comes true,” she said.
Her passion has inspired others, including Jess Cunningham, who recently marked her first year as a volunteer. Starting as an event helper in 2023, Jess stepped into a branch role last year and now uses her graphic design skills to promote events.
“I wasn’t sure how much I could contribute while working full-time, but Bev encouraged me to jump in,” Jess said.
“Being part of Make-A-Wish has been so rewarding. Seeing the joy we bring to children and their families during their darkest hours is just the best.”
Branch president, Dave Williams, praised
the team’s spirit.
“We have a terrific group of volunteers here in East Gippsland,” he said.
“Everyone brings their own skills and ideas, but we’re united by the goal of making wishes come true for children across Australia.”
Looking ahead, the branch is preparing for its annual shopping spree on November 21, with 10 Bairnsdale CBD stores opening after hours for a fun evening of Christmas shopping in support of Make-A-Wish.
