The sheep worm, Barber’s Pole, is set to continue wreaking havoc again this season given wet humid conditions that allow the worm to thrive.
A recent information day about combatting Barber’s Pole and drench resistance was well received in the Buchan and Gelantipy districts, with 20 farming businesses represented at the two sites.
The Buchan Recovery Discussion Group, organised by local agricultural consultant and veterinarian, Alison Gunn, hosted guest speaker, Matt Playford, of Dawbuts in Sydney, a laboratory diagnostics business that tests worm egg counts in manure and resistance.
Matt spoke about minimising drench resistance and controlling Barber’s Pole, with the group discussion also taking a big focus on fluke and lice control and worm control in cattle.
Using long acting and short acting drench together was one of the strategies to combat the fertile, fast spreading worm.
