A mainstay for local adventurers, Bairnsdale Camping and Outdoors, will shut its doors for the final time on Sunday, November 9, as owners Wendy Brownrigg and David Neale head into a well-earned retirement.
Since its establishment in 1996, the store has been a cornerstone of the East Gippsland outdoor community, building a loyal client base over nearly three decades.
David’s connection to the region’s outdoor scene began long before the store opened; he moved to Bairnsdale in the 1970s to teach Outdoor Education, sharing his passion with countless students.
This passion for the outdoors, shared by both Wendy and David who are avid walkers and hikers, was the foundation of their business.
It’s also how they met – they were both members of the Bairnsdale Bushwalking Club.
Wendy is a born and bred Bairnsdale local, doing a great deal of travelling in Australia and overseas.
Wendy previously worked in administration at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service before working at East Gippsland Water.
She was also a member of the Sarsfield Fire Brigade, finishing up eight years ago.
David has worked in Outdoor Education for more than 15 years and has been a member in a number of local community groups including the Mitchell River Rotary Club, where he served for 29 years.
When the pair decided to open Bairnsdale Camping an Outdoors, their mission was to “be different”, offering advice to customers about products and sharing their knowledge.
However, David and Wendy noted the
retail landscape has changed significantly over the years.
They observed the beginning of a decline in local foot traffic following the closure of the Myer department store in Bairnsdale.
This trend continued with the arrival of larger chain stores, creating a challenging environment for independent retailers.
The pair said they’ll miss their loyal customer base.
“We’re going to miss the conversations we had with the customers, who later became friends,” Wendy said.
After 29 years of equipping the community for their adventures, the couple has decided it’s time to hang up the “closed” sign and enjoy their retirement.
The closure marks the end of an era for loyal customers and the Bairnsdale retail community.
