Grace Ingram had a good game for Bairnsdale in the women's on Sunday, scoring seven points and playing some outstanding defence against Maffra.

In a match that had a touch of everything, the Bairnsdale Bullets secured their first Gippsland Country Basketball League win of the season in an electrifying match-up against the Maffra Eagles at the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The narrow one-point victory had fans on the edge of their seats, the game a back-and-forth thriller, with standout performances from several players, most notably Bayley Croucher, who finished with 17 points.

The contest had all the drama and intensity of a finals-like game, with both teams exchanging momentum throughout.

The game started with high energy as the Bullets won the tip-off, but it was the Eagles’ Jack McQuillen who struck first, knocking down a quick three-pointer, his only points for the game.

Bairnsdale responded with a smooth floater from Taydyn Perry (15 points), but the Eagles continued to apply pressure, with Jaylen Henry (18) converting and getting an extra at the line to put them ahead.

A series of fouls early saw the Bullets reach five team fouls within the first five minutes.

Despite the early foul trouble, Mitchell Bruerton kept the Bullets in it, going to the rim and drawing a foul, hitting both free throws to cut the Eagles’ lead to 15–13.

The quarter ended with a few more exchanges, Croucher hitting two free throws, leaving the score at 17–15 in favour of Maffra.

Bairnsdale came out strong in the second quarter, with Rex Hargreaves (10) finding Bruerton for a crafty up-and-under lay-up.

A pivotal moment came with Palmer taking a charge, sparking a huge reaction from the bench, just as the Eagles opened up a handy eight-point advantage.

Following that, the Bullets caught fire, with Chris Fields nailing a big three-pointer, followed shortly after by Hargreaves.

The game saw more fouls, with Croucher igniting the crowd with a basket but unable to convert the extra shot. Palmer was also fouled, converting both attempts to put the Bullets back within four.

Despite some more foul issues, and official warnings on Maffra’s Coby Burgiel (13) and the Bullets’ Charles O’Byrne, for some push-and-shove and trash talk, the Eagles held a slim 36–32 advantage at half-time.

After the break, the Bullets’ defence stepped up with Hargreaves stealing the ball and racing down for a lay-up.

However, the Eagles bounced back quickly, with Owen Booth (10) hitting a big three-pointer to again lengthen the lead to five, but Perry hit back shortly after with one of his own.

Both sides were struggling to convert from the free-throw line, which had the potential to come back and haunt them down the stretch.

The game was truly on a knife-edge as Perry posted up and scored to get the Bullets within three.

O’Byrne was also sent to the line, making one, before a late goal to both Coby and Judd Burgiel put the score at 48–42 at the final change.

The fourth quarter was nothing short of dramatic. Bairnsdale came out aggressive, with O’Byrne driving to the rim for an easy score, while also blocking a shot from Coby Burgiel at the other end.

Henry responded with a couple of baskets for the Eagles, extending the lead to eight, which went to nine when he converted the extra. But the Bullets weren’t done yet.

Perry scored a quick lay-up, Bruerton followed up quickly, and Hargreaves drove to the rim for another two points.

Then Croucher knocked down a big two-pointer followed by a huge three-pointer, giving the Bullets the lead for the first time in the match, 55–53, which had the crowd buzzing.

Henry hit a mid-range shot to tie the game at 55-all, as tension ramped up when the Eagles were awarded bonus free throws, but Henry missed both.

Croucher drew a crucial foul, putting the Bullets ahead 58–55, before the Eagles mounted another challenge, Coby Burgiel hitting a floater to pull within one.

Shortly after, Coby Burgiel fouled out, causing some drama on the Maffra bench, with their supporters unsure if he had actually fouled out, but the game carried on.

The Bullets responded, and Perry made both free throws to give the Bullets a 60–57 lead.

Henry responded with a minute to go for Maffra, drawing back with one. Hargreaves doubled the advantage at the line with 18 seconds to play, as both sides had chances to steal the victory.

The Eagles quickly called a timeout to set a play and advance the ball to the frontcourt. Henry found himself with the ball, drove in and got fouled.

With one second remaining, Henry had a chance to draw the game for the Eagles, but after converting the first free throw, he missed the second, and the Bullets held on for the dramatic win, 61–60.

The victory was huge for the Bullets’ confidence for the rest of the season as their young guns continue to build, showing they have the talent and composure to compete at a high level.

This thrilling win will surely be one to remember, and the Bullets will look to build on this momentum as they progress through the season and plan for next season.

Earlier in the women’s game, in a dominating performance, the Maffra Eagles cruised to a big victory, with a well-balanced offensive and defensive display.

From start to finish, the Eagles controlled the tempo, with standout performances and outstanding defence that restricted the Bullets early, but a strong second half saw Bairnsdale get their highest score for the season, beating the previous day’s effort.

The Eagles came out of the gate with intense defensive pressure, led by Indi Gieschen and Isabel Goldsmith (13), who made life difficult for the Bullets.

Early on, the Bullets’ back-court issues were evident as they struggled to break the Eagles’ full-court pressure.

Ashlea Higgins (23) opened the scoring with a three-pointer, as Maffra capitalised on a series of easy steals, leading to some quick baskets.

Gieschen added a three-pointer of her own, while the Bullets had difficulty getting the ball across half-court. The Eagles led 24–5 at the first break, as they set the tone with overwhelming defence.

The second quarter saw more of the same from the Eagles as their defence continued to hold the Bullets, while in offence, Tori Patterson (17) and Meg Fitt (14) worked into the match.

Despite a couple of individual efforts from Jaime Fordham (7) from mid-range and Gemma Geer on the fast break, the Bullets couldn’t get anything consistent going offensively.

Grace Ingram (7) had a moment of brilliance, driving to the rim and drawing a foul, making both free throws to give the Bullets something to be excited about, but the Eagles were relentless, forcing turnovers and staying sharp on defence.

Fordham nailed a three-pointer just before the buzzer to end the half, but the Eagles still held a commanding 50–21 lead at the break.

The third quarter saw the Bullets attempt to claw their way back into the game with a few flashes of offensive creativity.

Sophie Fontaine (7) made a quick two-pointer to start the quarter, and Ellie Savige had a beautiful cut to the basket for an easy score.

However, the Eagles’ lead continued to grow as their defence held every attempt the Bullets made to gain any momentum.

Fontaine was fouled on a three-point attempt, sinking one of three free throws, and then Ingram added a mid-range jumper for the Bullets.

The Eagles, though, were simply too strong; they capitalised on nearly every possession, while Fontaine and Geer both hit mid-range shots for Bairnsdale despite the defence never letting up.

By the end of the third quarter, the Eagles were up 80–35, but the Bullets’ third term was definitely their best quarter of the match, showing plenty of grit in defence and imagination in attack.

The fourth quarter played out much like the rest of the game, with the Eagles continuing to dominate in all areas.

Lillyarna Perry connected with Mooney for a smooth two-point floater, and Perry then converted a free throw after a foul, while Fontaine added another mid-range jumper following a beautiful keep-in pass.

Despite the overwhelming deficit, the Bullets refused to give up, with Geer scoring a final two-pointer to cap off the game.

However, there was no stopping the Eagles, who finished strong with a 103–42 win.

Alex Gallatly was best on court with 24 points, consistently scoring and pivotal to the Eagles’ success. She played a key role in their dominant win.

The Bullets’ best was Grace Ingram, impressive at both ends.

In the end, the Eagles’ defence and overall team play were simply too good for Bairnsdale, who still had plenty to be happy about, although not the result they were after.

Both games this weekend saw them get the season’s highest score, showing that the offence is starting to flow.

The Bullets have a double-header this weekend, both games on the road, taking on Pakenham (Saturday) and Wonthaggi (Sunday).

They was plenty of excitement at the BARC last Sunday, with Bairnsdale hanging on for a one-point Gippsland Country Basketball League victory over Maffra – the Bullets’ first of the season.
Bayley Croucher was pivotal in the Bullets win, and was all smiles after match with team assistant coach, Leroi Tupou. (PS)
