INTERVIEW WITH PAYNESVILLE’S LEIGH ROBINSON –
MASTER SHIPWRIGHT & LOCAL LEGEND –
In this episode, Byron Smith visit 92 year-old Master Shipwright and local legend, Leigh Robinson, at his home in Paynesville.
Leigh is the son of Sam and Bessie Robinson. Sam was a well known local fisherman who was born on Raymond Island in 1901 and was the grandson of the first selectors of land on the Island.
Growing up in Paynesville – back when there were only three roads and fewer than 50 homes – Leigh has lots of stories to tell about his early days on the Gippsland Lakes, as well as his interstate and overseas adventures in the ship-making, oil and horse racing industries.
A former national sailing champion and an oracle when it comes to the local waters and local history, it was a pleasure to visit Leigh at his home in Langford Parade and hear about his colourful life.
