Local man Matthew Side is urging motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to stay safe on Gippsland roads after surviving a serious traffic accident earlier this year.
Mr Side was involved in a collision on May 21 at about 2.30pm on Paynesville Road, near the golf course, where roadworks were underway. He said two vehicles in front of him and his own were struck from behind by another driver.
According to Mr Side, the driver responsible was later found to have a medical condition and should not have been driving at the time.
The impact resulted in significant injuries for Mr Side, who was flown by air ambulance to The Alfred Hospital the following morning. He required surgery to repair three ligaments in his knee and spent six weeks on crutches, followed by four months of intensive physiotherapy.
Now on the road to recovery, Mr Side has chosen to share his experience — along with a photo of himself with his new bike — to encourage greater awareness and caution among all road users.
“I just want people to stay safe and think about what’s best for them,” Mr Side said.
“Whether you’re on two wheels, four wheels, walking or riding a push bike, safety should always come first.”
Mr Side hopes his story serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and following medical advice, particularly when it comes to road safety.
