Omeo’s historic main street has received a major refresh, making it easier, safer and more enjoyable for locals and visitors to explore the town’s gold mining heritage, scenic surroundings and world-class mountain bike trails.
Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes announced the completion of streetscape upgrades along Day Avenue, between Short Street and Sebastapol Hill Road, delivered with a $200,000 investment from the State Government. The works created 10 local jobs during construction.
“Omeo is a High Country gem and these upgrades have given the town’s main street a real lift—making it safer, greener and easier to explore and enjoy,” Ms Symes said.
The 250-metre section of Day Avenue has been transformed with new and improved footpaths on both sides of the street, decorative pavements near intersections and heritage buildings, and over 500 metres of renewed kerbs and channels. A raised pedestrian crossing has been installed to improve safety and accessibility, while designated parking makes it easier for people with mobility challenges to navigate the town centre.
East Gippsland Shire Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said the improvements came at a pivotal time for Omeo.
“From upgraded pedestrian links to new bike racks and a refreshed streetscape, these improvements come at a pivotal moment for Omeo,” she said.
The streetscape now features new trees and plantings to provide shade and a vibrant atmosphere, along with street furniture such as seating and picnic tables to
encourage rest, relaxation and social connection. New bicycle parking has also been installed, catering to both locals and visitors exploring Omeo’s 114 kilometres of cross-country and gravity mountain bike trails, funded through a $4.1 million government investment.
Member for Eastern Victoria Tom McIntosh highlighted the broader benefits of the upgrades: “With better paths, more accessible parking and new worker housing on the way, we’re supporting Omeo with the infrastructure, skills and workforce it needs to grow and thrive.”
The upgrades complement the construction of new worker housing near Omeo District Hospital, delivered through the Regional Worker Accommodation Fund, which will strengthen the local workforce and services.
State Government support for Omeo forms part of more than $47 billion invested in rural and regional towns across Victoria in just over a decade, providing the infrastructure, skills and workforce needed for communities to thrive.
