Bairnsdale Cricket Association top-grade cricket resumes this Saturday following a competition bye over the Australia Day
long weekend.
Players should be refreshed, with the top six sides still in contention for finals.
Clubs have six days of cricket to make their case, with the start of round 14 marking the beginning of three long-form matches that could decide the season’s outcome.
Wy Yung (52 points) currently sit atop the table, ahead of Lindenow South Glenaladale (52) on percentage, followed by Lucknow (36), West Bairnsdale (34), Orbost (30) and Lakes Entrance (28).
Paynesville (24), St Mary’s Nagle (18) and Meerlieu (10) face almost impossible tasks.
The Gulls are technically still alive but have a bye in the final three rounds, making their path to finals extremely difficult. Wy Yung also has a bye, which will likely see Lindenow South Glenaladale finish on top of the ladder.
Weather and the ability of teams to push for maximum points in two-day fixtures could also shake up the top four. An outright victory could see a side leapfrog several contenders even after a single match.
As it stands, the Tigers and Bulls are assured of finals participation, while the Magpies and West are playing in form worthy of finals action. The Blues and Seagulls have also shown at times that they are capable of mixing it with the best. Orbost won its first four matches, while Lakes Entrance has a victory over Lindenow South Glenaladale this season.
This week’s marquee clash sees star-studded West Lindenow South Glenaladale host Lucknow at Glenaladale Recreation Reserve. The home side boasts a wealth of talent led by Haydn Erfurth and the rejuvenated Scott Davidson, complemented by rising stars Logan Dunkley and Seth Smith.
Lucknow has built an emerging side blending experience, youth, and imported talent. Adam Bull has been a great recent addition, Jarryd Floyd continues to deliver, and youngsters Mitchell Johnson and Taj Corben show plenty of promise.
Rico Fourie and Ayush Verma bring class and skill to the line-up. Lucknow showed its potential against Orbost last match, but to topple West, the Magpies will need to raise their level.
A close second feature is West Bairnsdale against Orbost at Bairnsdale City Oval.
The Blues have the firepower to match West with both bat and ball, but Orbost will feel more comfortable on their home deck, which suits their attacking style.
Victory over West would boost Orbost’s morale and set them up for winnable games against Meerlieu and Lakes Entrance, whose finals hopes could be in tatters by the final round. West, however, remains a tough opponent at home, currently riding the momentum of two straight wins.
Lakes Entrance will likely need to win all three remaining matches — or secure maximum points in one or two—to stay in contention.
Their first challenge is an improving St Mary’s Nagle at Nagle College, a potentially tricky fixture.
The Seagulls’ biggest issue this season has been inconsistent batting, preventing them from stringing consecutive wins.Lakes Entrance will hope to click at the right time to keep their finals hopes alive.
Meerlieu hosts Paynesville, with the Gulls aiming for maximum points.
Success will depend on big contributions from star batsman Nathan Schoultz, whose battle with Connor Mitchell could decide the match.
However, clashes between these sides are traditionally close, making outright victory unlikely; a Meerlieu win is the more probable outcome, especially if Reagan Kyle finds form in the middle.
