Paynesville recorded a pivotal victory over ladder leader Meerlieu last week in the Bairnsdale Cricket Association women’s competition at AJ Freeman Reserve.
The win lifts the Gulls six points clear of Lucknow in the race for the second grand final berth, with just two rounds remaining in the home-and-away season. It marked only the second loss of the campaign for the Tussocks, who in their debut season still sit three games clear on top of the ladder.
Paynesville batted first and posted 3/115 from its 20 overs, with skipper Hannah Fleming top-scoring with 30 retired. Dixie Clack continued her strong form with 28, while Amy Geisler remained unbeaten on 20. Lucy Simpson was the leading wicket-taker for Meerlieu, finishing with 2/19 from four overs.
In reply, the Tussocks were restricted to 3/105, with Kelsey East top-scoring with 30 retired and Simpson again contributing, finishing 17 not out.
Despite the win, the Gulls will be concerned by conceding 23 wides as part of a hefty 40 extras, but their overall performance was still strong enough to secure victory and set up a thrilling finish to the season.
