Wickets continued to tumble on day two at Hudson-Alvin Oval last Saturday as Lucknow and West Bairnsdale battled for a crucial semi-final spot in round 15 of the Bairnsdale Cricket Association (BCA).
A total of 16 wickets fell on day one, matched by another 16 on the second afternoon, as West Bairnsdale
claimed an outright victory, earning 10 match points and confirming their place in the March finals. The win lifted them to 50 points in third place, 14 clear of fourth-placed Orbost, who sit just above Lucknow on percentage.
West Bairnsdale will finish the home-and-away season at Bairnsdale City Oval, hosting ladder leaders Lindenow South Glenaladale. Lucknow, meanwhile, must beat Meerlieu in the final round and hope Lakes Entrance can upset Orbost to keep its finals hopes alive. An outright win over the Tussocks could also see the Magpies secure a top-four spot.
West resumed at 6/75 and added 33 runs across 13 overs to finish on 108, giving them a first-innings lead of 34 in a low-scoring contest. Brad Daniel was the standout for West remaining unbeaten on 39 from 89 balls. Youngster Archie Poore impressed with the ball claiming 3/9 from seven overs, while Ayush Verma finished with 4/48 from 21 economical overs.
Lucknow’s second innings saw early wickets fall leaving them 4/35 by the 12th over. A 52-ball 56 from Rico Fourie and 33 from 38 balls by Jarryd Floyd steadied the innings, but when Floyd was dismissed at 5/121, the tail offered little resistance and Lucknow was bowled out for 139. The wickets were shared between Oscar Clarke (5/52) and Ryan Halford (4/32), with Halford finishing with eight for the match.
West Bairnsdale required 106 from 36 overs to secure maximum points. Early losses of Brodie Anderson and Mitchell Toms threatened the chase, but Tom Hudson (49 from 71) and Ryan Halford (38 from 48) guided their side to victory with seven overs to spare.
The result caps a thrilling contest full of individual highlights and ensures West Bairnsdale will feature in the finals series.
