As the Gippsland Lakes gear up to host more than 200 vessels for the 2026 Paynesville Classic Boat Rally and Maritime Festival, organisers have introduced a major new traffic management plan to keep the town’s streets clear and residents happy.
The biennial event, running this weekend from February 27 to March 1, is expected to attract record crowds with the addition of the inaugural Gippsland Lakes Boat Show.
To prevent the “parking bedlam” often seen at large-scale festivals, the rally committee has revamped how visitors arrive and move through the township.
Central to the plan is a dedicated, high-capacity vehicle parking area on the grassy frontage of the Paynesville Motor Cruiser Club at 80 Slip Road.
Traffic management personnel will be stationed along the main approach, with prominent signage beginning on
Paynesville Road directing visitors to the Slip Road hub.
Organisers are urging attendees to follow the signs rather than attempting to find street parking in residential areas.
“We want to avoid congestion and keep the town centre accessible for everyone,” a committee spokesperson said.
“By directing traffic to a single, managed area, visitors can enjoy a stress-free start to the weekend while keeping local streets clear.”
The parking area will be managed by Variety – the Children’s Charity of Victoria. While parking is free, visitors are encouraged to donate a gold coin to support the charity’s work with Victorian children.
Non-Stop Shuttle Service
A free shuttle bus service provided by Gillicks Buslines will run a continuous loop from 8.30am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, transporting passengers from the car park to the festival hub at the corner of Wellington Street and The Esplanade. Buses will run every few minutes, eliminating concerns about long walks or wait times.
The traffic initiatives coincide with a packed festival schedule, including:
– The Grand Parade (Saturday): A “WOW factor” display of classic vessels.
– Tall Ship Tours: On-board tours and sailing with the iconic Enterprize.
– Speakers forum: Featuring marine experts such as Dr Kate Robb, and the Australian premiere of the documentary Bonnie Wee Boats.
– Classic Dinghy Regatta: A new addition celebrating Australia’s sailing heritage.
The festival kicks off with a Meet ‘n’ Greet on Friday at 4pm at the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club. Organisers say that by following the new parking signs and using the shuttle service, the only “clogged” views this weekend will be the beautiful masts of the classic fleet.
