East Gippsland Shire Council’ s project to upgrade part of Nicholson Street, Bairnsdale, restarted last Friday after works paused over the Christmas trading period.
Work started at the Service Street intersection before progressing along Nicholson Street to the mall.
Car parking in this area of Nicholson Street will be reduced, with a work site established over some centre-of-road parking spaces.
Mayor, Cr Natalie O’ Connell, said the $1.167 million project will improve pedestrian access, safety, and amenity of the popular retail strip.
“The project will redesign the landscaping, street and footpaths in this area to create an inviting place for people to stop and spend time,” Cr O’Connell said.
“There will be 18 fewer car parks, however council has formalised parking arrangements further along Nicholson Street on the edge of the CBD, which has improved the availability of parking.”
Contractors have started installing the streetscape design elements.
Work has also started at the roundabout before progressing down Nicholson Street.
To create a space that encourages a walkable central business district, the design includes: raised pedestrian crossings; new tree plantings; new seats; new lighting; and footpath upgrades.
“These design elements are factors used in sustainable urban design to create spaces that meet the needs of drivers and pedestrians,” Cr O’ Connell said.
Council has advised nearby businesses of the planned works and all businesses will remain open for business throughout the construction period. The project is expected to be completed this June.
The project is stage three of the Re-imagining Bairnsdale masterplan, a document outlining the long-term vision for updating and improving the town’s central business district.
