Rain washed out day one of the Bairnsdale Cricket Association’s final round last Saturday forcing the matches to revert to a one-day format his weekend.
It shapes as an intriguing round with multiple scenarios still possible before the final four and their order are confirmed for semi-final action. Clubs face the risk of missing opportunities to push into the top four or improve their ladder positions if the weather intervenes again. With the one-day format, winning sides will secure six points, removing the possibility of maximum points.
The current ladder sees Lindenow South Glenaladale (58) leading, followed by Wy Yung (52), West Bairnsdale (50) and Orbost (36) in the top four. Lucknow (36) and Lakes Entrance (34) remain in contention for a finals spot with victories in the final round.
While the top three sides are secure, the fourth spot is wide open. The top three order could also change: Wy Yung can claim first place by defeating Paynesville, provided West Bairnsdale topples the Bulls at Bairnsdale City Oval. Another scenario sees West Bairnsdale winning while Paynesville causes an upset at Bullumwaal Road, giving West second place and the right to host a semi-final against Wy Yung at the City Oval — a venue that could challenge the Tigers’ attacking batting style.
Paynesville, eliminated from finals contention last week, will simply complete their fixture against Wy Yung.
The battle for fourth spot is expected to go down to the wire. If Orbost defeats Lakes Entrance at Lakeside Oval, they will return to finals after a couple of years in the wilderness. For Lakes Entrance to make the finals, both Lucknow and Orbost would need to falter. Orbost controls its own destiny, while Lucknow only needs a win if Orbost slips. Lucknow faces Meerlieu, chasing their second win of the season, with little incentive beyond finishing the season strongly.
After a season of fiercely contested ladder positions, the final day of the home-and-away season will be decisive. Positions are expected to be confirmed around 6 pm, with teams hoping to play for the rewards they have worked toward all season.
