Art lovers are being invited to explore a trio of new exhibitions opening at the East Gippsland Art Gallery later this month.
The exhibitions open at 5.30pm this Friday, March 20, with the public welcome to attend the free launch. The displays will remain on show until April 24.
Headlining the main gallery is Loose Company, a playful and imaginative series of stylised paintings by artist Rhonda Gray. The works follow an unlikely cast of animal characters, including women deer, hares, parrots and cats, as they embark on late-night adventures.
The series builds towards three larger paintings that depict a mischievous night out, from arriving at a bar and indulging in a few small vices to eventually being shown the door before regrouping over late-night takeaway. Companion paintings surrounding the central works gradually introduce the characters and unfold the story.
“It’s a humorous story about companionship, behaviour, and the occasionally feral side of ourselves,” Gray said.
In the east gallery, a community photo exhibition titled Pet Pride celebrates diversity, inclusion and unconditional love through images of pets submitted by local residents. The exhibition was organised by Gippsland Lakes Complete Health, with pets photographed wearing or surrounded by rainbow and pride-inspired colours.
“Pet Pride is about celebrating our community and the many ways we show pride and support for one another,” said Marnie Graham,
Inclusion and Diversity
Officer at Gippsland Lakes Complete Health.
“Pets love without judgement, and this exhibition is a fun and colourful way to reflect the values of inclusion and acceptance that are so important in our community.”
Among the featured entries is Oakley, the dog of Nicole Gallagher, pictured proudly displaying the message that love is love.
Completing the trio of exhibitions is a showcase of local creativity featuring works by young artist Owen Rees.
Gallery visitors are encouraged to step inside and experience the playful narratives, colourful companions and creative talents of local artists.
