Past students of Bairnsdale High School came together at the Eagle Point foreshore on Saturday to celebrate 55 years since their VCE year in 1971.
Laughter and reminiscing filled the air as former classmates recognised one another despite the passing years. The group worked their way through a class photo of all 80 students, recalling names, sharing life stories, and updating each other on personal achievements. Moments of sadness were also shared for the friends who have passed, and hopes were expressed that those unable to attend this time would join in future reunions.
Conversation soon turned to brushes with fame and notable achievements. Among the stories shared:
– One attendee’s mother flew planes with John Denver.
– Another recounted Merka Mora staying in their childhood home.
– Some had connections with Slim Dusty, taught AFL star Patrick Dangerfield, or interviewed political figures like John English.
The diverse careers of the classmates reflect a wide array of talents and contributions. Over the decades, they have worked as teachers, librarians, nurses, lawyers, journalists, multilingual translators, business owners, artists, and broadcasters. Some have sailed around the world, managed farms, tourist businesses, or newsagencies, and others have been recognised with prestigious awards, including a life governorship of the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Even in their seventies, many remain active in professional and creative pursuits, contributing to their communities through choirs, seed banks, Food Bank initiatives, and other local clubs. Hobbies like golfing, gardening, fishing, sailing, and supporting grandchildren were also widely shared.
When asked if they would reunite again, the answer was unanimous: all hands were raised for a repeat gathering in March 2027.
