Bairnsdale Secondary College last week won the prestigious Spirit of Sport Award at Victorian School Sports Awards at the home of Victorian sport, the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The award was presented to college principal, Tony Roberts and school sports coordinator, Grant Sanderson.
While the school loves a win on the scoreboard, the award is about something much bigger: courage, respect, and teamwork.
The Spirit of Sport Award recognises the college’s inter-school sports participants for their positive values, behaviours, respect, integrity and leadership at events.
This year, the Bairnsdale senior teams in lawn bowls, table tennis, and soccer all stood out for their incredible character on and off the field.
The teams were mindful of caring for others, looking after injured teammates and put people first, while being consistently respectful and kind to their opponents.
They played fair, included everyone, and turned competitors into friends, proving that the best part of school sport is the friendships and happy memories made along the way.
Bairnsdale Secondary College is showing the whole state what School Sport Victoria is really all about.
The students have learnt that sport can build skills and make friends for life, while teaching valuable life lessons, which are so much more than just winning.
Sport has given all students, the opportunity and responsibility of representing, both their school and town.
Sanderson is a huge part of the award, dedication, leadership and guidance pivotal in the sporting programs.
