East Gippsland is preparing for one of its most significant weekends of the year, as a trio of historic events, the Omeo and Buchan Rodeos and the Tambo Valley Picnic Races return to celebrate country spirit, skill and community tradition.
From the high-adrenaline mountain peaks to the festive atmosphere of the coast, the region is set to offer something for every local and visitor this Easter.
The roar of the High Country begins on Easter Saturday, April 4, with the 71st annual Omeo High Country Rodeo.
Running from 10am to 5pm at the Omeo Rodeo Grounds, the event continues a proud legacy that dates back to 1955.
Originally established as a fundraiser for the local hospital, the rodeo remains a vital community pillar, with proceeds supporting local organisations and safety initiatives.
Spectators can expect a full program of classic events, including bull riding, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. A highlight of the day will be the junior whip-cracking performance during the lunch break.
The action shifts on Easter Sunday, April 5, to the Buchan Rodeo.
Known for its relaxed atmosphere, the Buchan event allows families to gather on the banks surrounding the arena for a close-up view of the competition.
For those seeking a blend of sport and social connection, the Tambo Valley Picnic Races will light up Swifts Creek on Easter Sunday. With a history spanning more than 120 years, the meeting is one of the region’s most
enduring traditions.
Held on the outskirts of town along the Great Alpine Road, the races offer a relaxed alternative to traditional metropolitan meetings.
Patrons are encouraged to bring chairs, rugs, and umbrellas to settle in for a day of country hospitality.
On the track, the feature event is the Tambo Valley Cup.
The course’s unique layout allows the field to thunder past spectators twice, providing an intimate view of the jockeys and horses in battle.
Off-track, the event is packed with family-friendly entertainment, including Fashions on the Field and the traditional Easter egg hunt held in the middle of the racecourse.
The festivities extend beyond the arena and the track, with local community groups and churches hosting events for all ages.
On Easter Saturday, the Marlo Primary School Fete will bring a burst of activity to the coastal town. A beloved local tradition, the fete is expected to draw large crowds of holidaymakers and residents alike, offering stalls, games, and entertainment to support the local school.
For those observing the spiritual significance of the holiday, the Riviera Christian Centre will host its Easter Sunday Service.
The service will be held at 103 Bairnsdale Dargo Road on Easter Sunday morning, providing a welcoming space for the community to come together in reflection and celebration.
From the roar of the bulls to the community spirit of the coast, this Easter promises to be a memorable celebration of the unmistakable spirit of the region.
