Gippsland Grammar Old Scholar Luka Blackmore has been recognised for his achievements in the building and construction industry, taking out a major honour at the Master Builders Victoria Regional Apprentice of the Year Awards.
Blackmore, who completed his fourth-year cabinet making and timber technology apprenticeship with Riviera Joinery, was awarded the Gippsland Apprentice of the Year Developing Leader Award after being nominated by TAFE Gippsland.
Judges praised both his technical ability and leadership qualities, noting his commitment to mentoring others during
his apprenticeship.
“Throughout his apprenticeship, Luka mentored work experience students and other apprentices, and noted that it brought him an unexpected joy,” the judges said.
Blackmore’s interest in the trade began during his time at Gippsland Grammar, where he studied VET Furnishing. His year 12 project, a table featuring a custom resin insert, highlighted the craftsmanship that has since underpinned his career.
Since completing his apprenticeship, he has launched his own business and secured contracting work with Glenn Warren Projects in Byron Bay, a connection made through Gippsland Grammar’s Old Scholar network.
Looking ahead, Blackmore aims to continue developing his skills, grow his business
and eventually move into teaching within
the trade.
“Luka is excited to continue building and mastering his skills and hopes to build his own business before eventually becoming a TAFE teacher to mould the next generation of cabinet makers,” judges said at the awards ceremony, held in Traralgon.
Gippsland Grammar congratulated Blackmore on his achievement, highlighting the dedication and leadership he has demonstrated since his school years.
Blackmore is the son of Brett and Kristen Blackmore of Paynesville and the older brother of Enzo and Arlo.
