Westdale Kindergarten children recently enjoyed a hands-on cricket program, learning the basics of the game with guidance from local parent and past student, Sally Guthrie.
Over two Fridays, both pre-prep groups took part in the fun and active sessions, where Sally introduced them to essential cricket equipment including helmets, gloves and pads. She also shared stories about local cricket star Sophie Molineux, inspiring the children with a regional sporting role model.
Sally Guthrie was recently a member of the Victorian Country women’s team that claimed the Australian Country Championship in South Australia.
The sessions gave the children the chance to practise key skills such as underarm and overarm throwing, bowling, and batting. Each session concluded with a mini cricket game, showcasing teamwork, encouragement, and plenty of excitement as the children applied their new skills on the field.
Kindergarten staff and parent volunteers also played a vital role in making the program a success, helping the children enjoy a safe and engaging experience.
This cricket program is part of Westdale Kindergarten’s ongoing pre-prep initiative, which aims to connect children with local community members and organisations through a range of activities. The initiative provides opportunities for children to learn, be active, and develop strong ties with the East Gippsland community.
