Bairnsdale Bridge Club held a truly novel event last weekend, the Bridge Marathon, an all-day event with players competing for cash prizes across three ranked groups.
Players from as far away as Traralgon played almost 60 boards with three major prizes awarded.
Winners were Henry Gasko and Jean Macleod (group one), Margaret Hillier and Ruth Spears (second section), and Marion and Kevin Taylor (group three).
The event was run by director, John Haylock, with the catering for morning and afternoon tea one of the features of the event.
In other bridge news, mother and son team, Terry and Nick Nadebaum are this year’s winners of the prestigious 2026 President’s Pairs, held at the Bairnsdale Bridge Club.
The prestigious annual tournament is a “Red Point” event, a designation marking a higher level of competitive play.
Runners-up were Robynne Owen and Lorraine Griffiths, with Anna Kearon and Ann Gibbs finishing third.
The tournament celebrates the club’s history, which dates back to its founding in 1977 by inaugural president Jeffry Brown.
The Bairnsdale Bridge Club continues to foster a vibrant community for local players, honouring nearly 50 years of tradition while encouraging the next generation of competitive bridge enthusiasts.
The club celebrated its annual Charity Day in style recently, combining competitive play with a commitment to supporting those in need.
The “Red Point” event which saw strong local engagement, with seven tables competing in a spirited Mitchell round.
Winners were Robyn Owen and Lorraine Griffiths (north-south) and Lorraine Robinson and Rosemarie Schwabegger (east-west).
Each year, the club selects a local organisation to benefit from the event’s proceeds, and for the second year running, Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House (BNH) was the proud recipient.
The event raised a total of $407, a generous sum collected through player table fees and a highly successful raffle.
These funds will directly support BNH in its mission to provide essential aid, social connection, and specialised mental health support to vulnerable individuals and agricultural communities across the East Gippsland and Wellington shires.
The Bairnsdale Bridge Club extends its thanks to all members who participated and contributed to making the day a success for such a vital local cause.
