The timeless works of William Shakespeare are being given a 21st-century makeover when the jukebox musical & Juliet opens at Bairnsdale’s Forge Theatre on May 1.
The production, staged by the Bairnsdale Production Line Theatre Company, reimagines the classic Romeo & Juliet story with a modern twist, asking what might have happened if Juliet chose her own path rather than following Shakespeare’s tragic ending.
Featuring music from pop artists including Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Jessie J, Kesha and Katy Perry, the show blends contemporary hits with a rewritten narrative that sees characters from the original play placed into new and unexpected circumstances.
The production removes Romeo from centre stage, instead placing Juliet’s journey of self-determination at the heart of the story, while Shakespeare himself is drawn into the reworked plot alongside his wife, Anne Hathaway, who helps shape the new direction of the tale.
While the musical is largely light-hearted
and energetic, it also explores themes of
family expectations, parental control and personal choice.
Playing Juliet’s parents, Lord and Lady Capulet, are Chris Axe and Maddie Clark. The pair bring different levels of theatrical experience to the stage but have developed a strong working partnership in rehearsals.
Clark, who also serves as choral director for the production, said balancing her on-stage and musical responsibilities has been demanding but rewarding.
“It certainly takes a bit of time management, but & Juliet is a great show musically, and the singers are such a talented bunch, so I see my role as a gift rather than a burden,” she said.
Axe, who began his theatre journey in 2019, said the role has challenged him, particularly in adapting his accent for the character.
“Every new show is a learning experience
for me,” he said.
“I’m fortunate to be surrounded by a great cast and directing team, and I think audiences will really enjoy the energy of the show.”
& Juliet runs for 10 performances at the Forge Theatre from May 1 to May 17, including three matinee shows. Tickets are available via the theatre’s website. The production is recommended for audiences aged 8 and
over and contains mild coarse language and adult themes.
