Construction of a new spillway and bridge at Livingstone Park in Omeo will start on Monday, April 20, as part of ongoing works to improve flood resilience and public access in the popular recreation area.
The project is being delivered by East Gippsland contractor Jarvis Norwood Construction and is expected to be completed by the end of June, weather permitting.
East Gippsland Shire Council says the works are part of a broader revitalisation of Livingstone Park aimed at protecting natural and cultural values while improving safety, accessibility and long-term environmental outcomes.
The existing spillway, which has reached the end of its service life, will be replaced with a rock spillway designed to slow and safely direct water during flood events. Council says the new structure will help reduce erosion while blending into the surrounding landscape.
A new bridge will also be installed to improve safe pedestrian access across the creek, particularly during periods of higher water flow.
Council chief executive officer Fiona Weigall said the project would strengthen the park’s resilience while improving community access.
“The new rock spillway has been carefully designed to slow and safely direct water during floods, reduce erosion and blend naturally into the landscape,” Ms Weigall said.
“The addition of a new bridge will also improve safe access across the creek, particularly during high-water events, helping ensure the park remains accessible for locals and visitors.”
She said the project reflects long-term planning for the site and forms part of a wider investment in Omeo’s public spaces.
Livingstone Park and the adjacent mountain bike park trailhead will remain open during construction, with temporary diversions in place for pedestrians and cyclists. Car parking will also continue to be available throughout the works.
Council acknowledged support from the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments in delivering the project.
Ms Weigall said it was encouraging to see construction begin following detailed planning and preparation.
“This is an important investment in Omeo’s future, delivering practical infrastructure improvements while enhancing the natural character of Livingstone Park,” she said.
Project updates will be made available through council’s Your Say platform.
