Reigning premier Omeo Benambra broke through for its first win of the season last Saturday, climbing off the bottom of the ladder in the Omeo District Football Netball League.
After a disappointing opening two rounds, the Alpine Ranges found their rhythm at home, defeating Buchan by 73 points to move into fourth place on the five-team ladder. The Cavemen now sit at the foot of the table, although 12 rounds remain in the season.
Both sides entered the match well below full strength, but it was the home team that secured the crucial four points. In a competition where momentum can shift quickly, Omeo Benambra made a strong statement as key players returned and new combinations began to click.
Ross Ansaldi (three goals) and James Cottrell were important inclusions, while former Traralgon Tyers United junior Tarquin Crosby (two goals) continued his strong development. Fit, athletic and increasingly influential, Crosby’s running capacity and disposal are expected to improve further with match exposure after limited senior football in recent years.
The Alpine Ranges set the tone early, kicking five first-quarter goals while also spraying several opportunities that could have extended the margin further. They led by 26 points at quarter-time and steadily built their advantage at each change.
Cody Graske (two goals) provided a strong forward target, while Hudson Collins continued his explosive form with three goals. Campbell Ahsam was influential in the ruck, with the side’s senior core — including Brandon Betts, Brent Hartnell and Riley Steenholdt — combining effectively with Collins and the emerging Crosby.
For Buchan, there were positives despite the result, with Jeffrey Walker returning to senior football and John Gooch kicking three goals. Jacob Kenyon, Jamie Welsh, Drew Duguid and James Woodgate also contributed solidly throughout the match.
