Taxi rank relocation proposal

by
1 May 2026
in Local News

A proposed relocation of the Nicholson Street taxi rank in Bairnsdale is being considered.

East Gippsland Shire Council has been considering alternative locations for the taxi rank following community feedback about ongoing anti–social behaviour occurring at or near the current site at the eastern end of the Mall.

Chief executive officer Fiona Weigall said following initial discussions with key stakeholders, the preferred location at this time is Nicholson Street adjoining Woolworths, subject to feedback from nearby property owners and traders.

“The work to explore a new location for the taxi rank is one of the commitments we had made to traders and the community regarding challenges with the Mall area,” Ms Weigall said.

“Importantly, there is no suggestion that taxi patrons are responsible for this behaviour. In fact, reports indicate the behaviour observed at the current location discourages customers from using the taxi rank.”

Ms Weigall said council officers have been working with a range of stakeholders, including taxi operators and Victoria Police, to identify a more suitable location that supports safety, accessibility and ease of use for customers, drivers and surrounding businesses.

“The proposed relocation aims to improve visibility and passive surveillance, which are key factors in discouraging anti–social behaviour. The current location in the Mall is recognised as having visibility limitations, while a new site would be selected to enhance safety and customer confidence.”

In assessing potential locations, council has considered:

– Proximity to supermarkets and other key destinations

– Ease of vehicle entry and exit

– Impacts on traffic flow and surrounding parking

Accessibility for people with disability.

Ms Weigall said traders, nearby property owners and the chamber of commerce were this week receiving a letter outlining the option to move the rank to Nicholson Street adjoining Woolworths.

“Early feedback indicates the location has support for many nearby traders and landowners. We will gather all feedback, which closes on May 8, before deciding on how we proceed with a relocation of the rank. We will keep the community informed.”
