Lucknow has defeated Paynesville in their standalone ANZAC Day clash under lights at the Lucknow Recreation Reserve, winning by 45 points.
A large crowd attended the match, with significant interest in former Collingwood and GWS Giants player Heath Shaw, who lined up at half back for Lucknow. The pre-match ANZAC ceremony set a respectful tone before football took centre stage.
While both sides competed with spirit, it was a reminder that their efforts are overshadowed by the service and sacrifice of Defence Force personnel who have served Australia for more than a century.
Lucknow started strongly, opening up a 13-point lead early, but a refreshed Paynesville outfit under coach Michael Boothey responded well and remained competitive throughout the contest. The Gulls’ scoring output continues to improve, and if that trajectory continues, they will be hopeful of breaking one of local football’s more significant winless streaks in the near future.
Boothey’s coaching methods, previously viewed as unconventional during his time at Bruthen last season, appear to be taking hold at Paynesville, a club that struggled in 2025 but is showing gradual improvement.
The Magpies led by 23 points at half time and maintained control from there. Shaw was composed across half-back, and while not prolific in possession, his leadership and mentoring of younger players such as Jack Saulle was a notable feature.
Lucknow remains unbeaten after two rounds but suffered some injury concerns, with Jesse Glassborow and Matt Corbett set to join Link McKenna on the sidelines.
Jayke Andrews continued his strong form with five goals, while Nick Mooney and Brock Smith each added three.
Andrews, who previously starred in the East Gippsland Football Netball League thirds for Wy Yung before a stint at Maffra, again proved a key target.
For Paynesville, Jordan Farquhar was once again among the best with three goals, while Troy Brown and Mark Cooper added two each.
Magpie veteran Ash Smith was awarded the ANZAC Medal and was named among the best alongside Ricky Tatnell, Andrews, Rhys Perkins, emerging talent Logan Croucher and Mooney.
For the Gulls, Ben McKinnon, Alex Saunders, Chris Hood and skipper Harry Gibbs were also among the better contributors.
Lucknow president Stephen Bull said the club was delighted with the occasion.
“We were expecting a big crowd and it even exceeded our expectations,” Bull said.
