Bairnsdale Secondary College has been recognised at state level for its positive values, leadership and fair play in interschool sport, receiving the School Sports Victoria “Spirit of Sport” Award.
The award recognises the consistent display of sportsmanship, integrity and respect shown by students at interschool sporting events, highlighting that success is measured not only by results, but by the way the game is played.
Principal Tony Roberts and college sports coordinator Grant Sanderson attended the School Sports Victoria awards ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where they accepted the honour on behalf of the college.
Mr Roberts said he was extremely proud of the achievement, noting students consistently represented the school with enthusiasm and integrity.
He said their efforts reflected the college’s core values of ‘Respect, Responsibility and Resilience’, along with courage and leadership.
“At its heart, the ‘Spirit of Sport’ is about far more than the final score. It reflects the identity of a school community — what it stands for and how it chooses to compete,” Mr Roberts said.
“Win or lose, sport provides invaluable life lessons. It teaches that while dedication and effort are essential, true success is defined by conduct: how players support their teammates, respond to challenges and show respect to opponents.
“Participation in sport, both within and beyond the College, plays a vital role in building life skills. Beyond competition, it fosters a strong sense of connectedness, bringing together students across year levels, cultures and genders.”
Mr Sanderson has played a key role in expanding the college’s interschool and state sporting opportunities, supporting increased participation and recognising the importance of sport in building confidence, pride and belonging.
The college said the award not only celebrates achievement, but reinforces a culture where character matters as much as competition, and where the spirit of sport is demonstrated every day.
