As Australia prepares to go blue this Friday, May 8, the Bairnsdale community is stepping up to show its heart, with local businesses like the Bairnsdale Horse Centre leading the charge for the eighth annual Do It For Dolly Day.
The national movement, held in memory of Dolly Everett, aims to break the $2 million fundraising barrier for the first time.
In East Gippsland, the day has taken on deep significance, with residents and businesses uniting to fund critical bullying support services and school programs.
Leading the local effort once again is the Bairnsdale Horse Centre, which has established itself as a powerhouse contributor to Dolly’s Dream.
Over the years, the centre has raised significant funds through its merchandise sales and local events, becoming one of the most prominent regional voices in the fight against bullying.
Their ongoing commitment highlights the strong connection between the rural community and the Everett family’s mission.
“Eight years on, the love Australians have shown for Dolly and for our cause never ceases to move us,” Kate Everett, co-founder of Dolly’s Dream said.
“This Friday we are asking every Australian to go blue and help us reach $2 million for the very first time.
“Every single dollar goes straight to supporting the many thousands of kids and families impacted by bullying right now across Australia. We want them to know they’re not alone, that there is support available through our 13 DOLLY (13 36 55) bullying support line and web chat and the Dolly’s Dream website.
Across the country, more than 1500 schools, workplaces and sporting clubs have signed up to fundraise.
The urgency of the cause is felt locally and nationally; currently, one in four Australian students from year four to year nine report being bullied every few weeks or more.
“Bullying doesn’t stop at the school gate, it follows young people via their phones into their bedrooms and into their sleep. That’s why Do It For Dolly Day and the funds we raise this week matters so much,” Sally Sweeney, Head of Dolly’s Dream said.
“This year we are closer than ever to raising $2 million, and with every Australian who goes BLUE on Friday, we get closer to a world where no kid feels they have nowhere to turn.
“If you or a young person you know is struggling with bullying, please call 13 DOLLY on 13 36 55 or use the webchat through the Dolly’s Dream website. For kids and teens, it’s there 24/7.”
Funds raised this Friday will go directly to services such as the 13 DOLLY bullying support line (13 36 55), which provides 24/7 assistance for kids, teens and parents.
Local residents are encouraged to support the Bairnsdale Horse Centre’s efforts or donate directly at the Do It For Dolly website.
Whether it’s wearing a blue shirt to work or making a contribution at the counter, Bairnsdale is proving that kindness is contagious.
