On April 24, the Bairnsdale Bridge Club gathered at its clubrooms to host the annual Winter Pairs competition, an event celebrating both high-level play and local history.
The tournament is held in honour of the late John and Luba Winter, long-time members who were instrumental in elevating the competitive standards of the club. The event is organised and sponsored by their son, David Winter, as a living tribute to his parents’ legacy.
This year’s proceedings featured a guest address from Judy Banks, a close friend and contemporary of the Winters. Banks shared nostalgic reflections on the early days of the Bairnsdale Bridge Club and the now-defunct Lakes Entrance Bridge Club, painting a vivid picture of the passion and camaraderie that once defined the region’s bridge community.
Beyond the competition at the tables, the event is known for its hospitality. David Winter provided lunch for all attendees, sparking a buzz of conversation that has become a hallmark of the day.
“The sharing of food and the excited chatter creates a unique atmosphere,” one club member said.
“It makes the afternoon session feel a trifle more relaxed, even though the play remains keenly competitive.”
The awards were presented by David Winter, who stood alongside a portrait of his parents, ensuring their memory remains at the heart of the club they loved. David continues the family tradition as a keen bridge player.
