Stratford has inflicted the first loss of the season on ladder-leaders Lucknow in a captivating round 11 of East Gippsland netball.
The Magpies had been all-conquering until now, but the reigning premier Swans have been building a formidable mid-season momentum. On Saturday at the Lucknow Recreation Reserve, the visitors proved that back-to-back pennants are well within their reach.
In an outstanding showcase of local netball featuring the cream of the competition’s talent, both sides traded blows in a spirited final term before the Swans ultimately emerged with a thrilling 43-40 victory. The result sees Stratford reclaim bragging rights after going down to the Magpies back in round three at Boyd Reserve. That remains the Swans’ solitary loss for the 2026 campaign, though they have also recorded two draws against arch-rivals Boisdale Briagolong.
Eliza Tatterson and Lilli Stobie were pivotal for the victors, battling hard against the likes of Erica Lynch and Macy Tatnell, who led the way for the Magpies.
Meanwhile, Lindenow breathed fresh life into the battle for the remaining top-four spaces — a race that looked all but over just a few weeks ago. The fifth-placed Cats made the most of their home-court advantage, upsetting the fourth-ranked Wy Yung in comfortable fashion, 42-29.
Lindenow now trails the Tigers by just two points on the ladder, with their confidence sky-high after scoring what could well be a season-defining victory. Given their comparable remaining draws, the Cats will likely need to claim the scalp of another top-three contender to sneak into the finals action. However, if they can continue to replicate the relentless pressure and intent they displayed on Saturday, that feat is certainly not out of the question.
The Cats’ victory was driven by inspirational performances from Justine White, Renee Egan and Ash Forehan. Sienna Anderson and Abbey Alvin were the standouts for the Tigers, who will need to regroup and reset quickly to keep their premiership window open.
At the Cabbage Patch, Boisdale Briagolong proved far too classy for Lakes Entrance, cruising to a comfortable 61-28 win. Despite losing several key players to Maffra ahead of this season, the Bombers continue to execute at a remarkably high level and remain firmly entrenched in the top tier of a highly competitive competition.
Sarah Gardiner, Zara Flynn and Ash McDonough were all in spectacular form for the Bombers. Conversely, Tayla Mills alongside Tommi and Poppy Carroll battled tirelessly under intense pressure for the Seagulls, who endure another challenging season.
In the final match of the round, Orbost Snowy Rovers registered their fourth win of the winter, overcoming a determined Paynesville 46-28 at AJ Freeman Reserve. Despite the deficit, it was one of the highest scoring outputs of the season for the Gulls, who continue to show steady week-by-week improvement.
Hayley Boxall, Makayla Edlington and emerging youngster Lara Seal starred for the winning Blues, while Teneille Walker, Libby Selleck, and Mel Ferris were named among the best for the home side.
The East Gippsland Football Netball League will enjoy a well-deserved competition-wide bye this weekend before players refocus for the final five rounds of the home-and-away season, setting the stage for an explosive finals series.
