East Gippsland Art Gallery’s much coveted Small Artwork Prize was won by Brad Brown for his work, Clothed in Respect and Unity, wood-burning and acrylic on wood.
The judge, Simon Gregg, director of Gippsland Art Gallery (Sale) said of Brad’s work, “This artwork has so much warmth and beauty, and it feels like a genuine statement from the artist’s heart. I love the combination of different elements to create a sense of magic and wonder.”
“This will be the first year that the winning work will be acquired into the Gallery collection, the first of what will be known as the East Gippsland Art Gallery Small Artwork Collection,” Crystal Stubbs, director of the East Gippsland Art Gallery, said.
“We are thrilled to have Brad’s beautiful work for this collection.”
The Carina Turner Environment prize was won by Jenny Toye for her sculptural work titled Eco-Ark.
The Youth Art Prize was won by Alice Grassby for her delicate graphite drawing titled Clayton.
The show was opened by deputy mayor, Councillor Jane Greacen, who thanked the sponsors. “All local businesses who understand the value of art, both socially and economically. Without their support, this prize would not be the significant exhibition that it is,” Cr Greacen said.
The gallery also extended a big thank you to all the artists who entered, this was a record-breaking year with more than 400 artworks on display.
The gallery takes no commission on works sold in this exhibition with 100 per cent of artwork sales going straight back to the artists.
