Bairnsdale Classic Car Club is celebrating Australia Day this Friday at the Rotunda in Main Street, Bairnsdale, starting at 7am.
“We are celebrating when the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 was passed and came into effect on Australia Day, January 26, 1949,” club secretary Pepe Petrovich said.
“This allowed all the people to become Australian citizens including Aboriginals. We were no longer classed as British subjects but as Australians. That is worth celebrating, we are all one and should be very proud of what we are.”
The day will start with a free breakfast, bacon, eggs and snags topped off with coffee and cold drinks.
The ceremony will start with a smoking and welcome ceremony.
There will be flag raising and the national anthem sung with East Gippsland Brass, as well as guest speakers and then presentations of the Citizen of the Year, Youth Citizen of the Year, and the Community Event of the Year.
“Bring your family along for this special day,” Pepe said.
