The Twin Rivers Men’s Shed took occupancy of new premises in Johnsonville in December last year, and members are now busy fitting it out and arranging equipment to best suit their needs.
They have plans also to create a quiet/clean area separate from the work area.
For the past three years during which the necessary approvals were obtained, funding was organised and the new shed constructed, the Men’s Shed was offered temporary accommodation in Swan Reach by Richard and Pat Gilbert.
The members are most grateful of this generosity by Richard and Pat.
Bunnings Bairnsdale – Tony and his crew – have been an enormous help, particularly in allowing the Men’s Shed to hold a sausage sizzle every Friday.
Recently the Men’s Shed held a successful garage sale.
Anyone is still welcome to drop in Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings to look at what they have for sale.
There is changing stock all the time as members do projects that interest themselves.
The Men’s Shed movement started in Australia and is now international.
If you looked inside a shed you might see a number of men making furniture, perhaps restoring bicycles for a local school, making bird nesting boxes, fixing lawn mowers or making a cubby house for community group to raffle, or just sitting quietly over a cup of tea.
You might also see a few young men working with the older men obtaining new skills and learning something about life from the men with whom they work.
Most men have learned from our culture that they don’t talk about feelings and emotions and many do not take an interest in their own health and wellbeing.
Most men are reluctant to talk about their emotions and that means that they usually don’t ask for help. This is where the Men’s Shed movement comes in.
Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all they’re looking for.
Members of Men’s Sheds come from all walks of life – the bond that unites them is that they are men who would like something useful to do with their time and make their lives more meaningful.
The Men’s Shed movement has now become one of the most powerful tools in addressing health and wellbeing and helping men to once again become valued and productive members of our community
At present, the Twin Rivers Men’s Shed operates three mornings a week (Tuesday to Thursday) in Johnsonville.
