Here’s a heads up for our Bairnsdale Sun Cinema’s Riviera Film Festival from March 7-20.
Six intriguing films, which have multi-nominations and/or have already won many awards are included.
Only two require subtitles, one being Anatomy of a Fall – Anatomie d’une Chute is the film’s original French title.
Dialogue is in both English and French.
Set in a lonely chalet in the French Alps, a man in his attic plays music so loud it’s a wonder it doesn’t cause an avalanche.
A boy, the noisy music-playing father’s son, walks his dog.
And then, a dead man lies in the snow in front of the chalet – perhaps he accidentally fell out of the third floor window.
A female German novelist (Sandra Hüller) is accused of murdering her husband (Samuel Theis).
Her sight-challenged son (Milo Machado-Graner) almost steals the film with his performance facing a moral dilemma as the main witness in this gripping courtroom drama.
Did she or did she not? Was the husband killed? An accident? Or did he take his own life?
Viewers expecting a simple solution in a conventional crime thriller will be disappointed.
This isn’t Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes, it is a complex psychological drama where truth has different aspects and different sides, depending on who’s doing the telling.
It is also an inquest into their marriage; private details are revealed as it investigates the couple’s personal life.
Anatomy of a Fall won the highest award in the Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d’Or.
Justine Triet is only the third woman to win the Palme d’Or.
A special Palme Dog Award was presented to Messi, the boy’s guide dog Snoop.
No Lassie, yet check out the dog!
In the French Cesar awards ceremony Anatomy of a Fall received 11 nominations and swept prizes with six trophies including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Original Screenplay, Editing, and Supporting Actor Swann Arlaud as the Courtroom Prosecutor.

The British BAFTA’s nominated the film six times, winning Original Screenplay.
