This British ghost story, a romantic fantasy takes audiences to places it hasn’t been.
It’s best experienced knowing as little as possible.
Lonely television screenwriter Adam (Andrew Scott) begins a relationship with his neighbour Harry (Paul Mescal, Academy Award nominee 2022).
Preoccupied with memories of the past Adam is drawn back to his childhood home where his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) appear to be living, just as they had 30 years earlier before Adam’s 12th birthday, and died in a car crash.
The chemistry between actors is what sells the main themes of loneliness, grief, and depression.
As a kid Adam couldn’t talk to his parents about being gay or why he was bullied.
It is not always clear if the parents after death are genuinely them or a vagary of Adam’s imagination.
Without a spoiler, the ending is both stunning and beautiful… or it could have been completely excised without damaging the film.
