Margaret Supplitt, president of the Bairnsdale Tennis Club, said the annual Labour Day Weekend Tennis Tournament, in its 76th year, involved more than 150 players from metropolitan Melbourne and Gippsland as well as many loyal local players supporting the event.
The winner of the men’s open singles title was popular Gippsland tennis coach Gavin McCoy, of Bairnsdale, while the ladies’ open singles was won by outstanding Sale junior Mia Goold.
The tournament has had a colourful history drawing players in the past from Australia’s Davis, Linton and Wilson cup squads as well as international players from Japan and England.
Margaret said these days the annual tournament has firmly placed itself in the tennis calendar as very much a family event.
The tournament is a successful competitive and social event as well as being a financial benefit for the club, only made successful by the volunteering of club members’ time.
Margaret said the club was most appreciative of the financial contribution that sponsors had made to make the weekend tick so well.
