Community barbecue for wildlife carers

15 March 2020
in Local News

Jodie-Anne and Mick from season 10 of My Kitchen Rules, and now Champagne Food on a Beer Budget, will be hosting a community barbecue in Bruthen this Thursday from 11.30am.

In a call to arms reaction to the horrendous bushfires that ravaged Eastern Victoria, thousands of people from Australia and around the world kindly donated animal food, animal supplements, bandages and medical supplies, pouches and various other animal aids to Victorian Wildlife carers.

Learning that the carers themselves were swamped with three to four times, and in some cases up to 10 times the amount of sick and injured wildlife, Mick and Jodie-Anne quickly realised there was very little care for the carers.

“On Australia Day this year we launched a fundraiser in conjunction with the Kyabram Fauna Park to help the wildlife carers in East Gippsland and Eastern Victoria,” Jodie-Anne said.

“We have raised nearly $10,000 in funds and goods so far, that we will deliver in person to these carers at a get together in Bruthen this Thursday. It is a little known fact that Victorian wildlife carers are not paid and in fact use their own funds to buy all supplies for the animals they care for.

“They are also responsible for veterinary bills and prescribed medicines. We will be providing some financial relief in a hope to raise morale and keep mental health levels in check.

“We will also be providing personal care packages and a barbecue for a chance to chat, share stories and generally relax. With the stress of emotional and monetary pressures these remarkable people are under, we want to show our appreciation and put a smile on their faces, if only for a few weeks.

“We are already planning our next trip in April to visit carers closer to the border and further north.

“We have a Go Fund Me page for those who would like to help us support these incredible people. Please search Food and Fauna Wildlife Fundraiser.”
