David and Tanya Preston have been on their bikes, training to pedal 1000km through the Alpine mountain range when they leave Melbourne Royal Children’s hospital on April 1.
Twenty-eight fellow charity riders in the group are all aiming to fundraise for the Live for Lily foundation with personal and corporate sponsorship.
An eclectic group of Sunday morning cyclists will ride from Melbourne to Mansfield, Mt Hotham, Omeo, Metung, through South Gippsland to Phillip Island and back into Melbourne.
The ride is over seven days, and in preparation for the gut busting ride Tanya and David have been averaging around 250kms a week on the road, topping it off with indoor training.
They have also put their bodies through a little stress, pushing up Mt Buffalo in training rides.
David and Tanya were touched by cancer in 2008 when their son Alex was diagnosed with brain cancer.
Alex passed away in 2009.
The ride for Lily 2024 is being ridden in memory of Alex, the ride will retrace the journey the Preston family took when they discovered Alex was suffering from brain cancer.
The fundraising ride is coordinated by the Live for Lily Foundation.
To donate towards Tanya and David’s fundraising efforts it’s as easy as googling the Live for Lily website or clicking on the QR code in the picture of the local husband and wife team, or pop into David’s Amcal Pharmacy on the corner of Main and Service Bairnsdale and chat to David or his staff about supporting them on the fundraising ride.
The Live for Lily Foundation was set up in memory of Lily Hester, who lost her battle with cancer in 2014 aged nine.
The foundation raises funds and awareness of childhood cancers and monies raised go directly towards research dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancers.
The foundation is a not-for-profit organisation and fully volunteer run.
