The Bairnsdale Regional Unlimited Sports (BRUS) under 12 girls basketball side have taken out the Victorian State-Wide Aboriginal Basketball Classic held in Shepparton over the long weekend.
Coached by first-time coach Sandra Fenton, the girls surprised themselves and coach Fenton with their impressive form, given the girls had never played as a team.
BRUS team members Kyah Hood, Marilyn Fenton, Tanarli Hayes, Zayarah Baxter, Nylah Walker, Mallana Mullet, Audrina Shiels and Arohah Davies–Hood listened intently all weekend to the direction given by Sandra, which resulted in a cohesive and strong team that was too good for all comers.
Marilyn Fenton was overjoyed to be presented with the ‘Best in Finals’ trophy, while the other girls throughly enjoyed the weekend and the experience it offered.
The Victorian Aboriginal Community Services (VACSAL) understands the significant role that gatherings, such as family, community, cultural and sporting events have played in our Aboriginal community since time began.
The tournament was hosted by the VACSAL Organising Committee and is an opportunity for Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to come together and compete for the basketball title of state champions.
