Former local golf star Jasper Stubbs is currently in America preparing for the US Masters to be played at the Augusta National Golf Club from April 11-14.
The Masters Tournament is one of the four men’s major golf championships in professional golf, scheduled for the first full week in April, the first major golf tournament of the year.
Unlike the other major tournaments, the Masters is always held at the same location, Augusta National Golf Club, a private course in the city of Augusta, Georgia.
The event will feature the sport’s biggest names, including its biggest Tiger Woods.
Australia will be well represented with Cameron Smith, Min Woo Lee, Cameron Davis, Jason Day and 2013 champion Adam Scott joining Stubbs in the exclusive field.
Stubbs was guaranteed a start in the 2024 US Masters and 2024 British Open, as well as the 2024 British Amateur Championship, one of the biggest and most prestigious amateur championships in the world, after claiming his biggest win in the sport in October 2023.
Stubbs’ come-from-behind victory in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Royal Melbourne has certainly opened plenty of doors for the talented 23-year-old.
The Asia-Pacific Amateur field consisted of 120 of the top male amateurs from the Asia-Pacific region, from 37 nations, competing in a tournament that was created in 2009, further developing amateur golf throughout the region.
Stubbs continued his amazing run of form at Australian Open, the only amateur to make the cut, taking out the low men’s amateur title.
Stubbs checked out the Augusta National Course in February and is in aura of what he saw.
“I played three practice rounds, walking down among the pine trees with crystal clear skies, there isn’t really a better feeling,” Stubbs said.
The course has claimed plenty of victims over the years, but Stubbs is looking forward to the challenge.
“The greens and fairways are so slopey, a lot more slope in them than you think by watching on TV, expecting them to be lightning fast,” Stubbs said.
Going into the tournament with an open mind, Stubbs is under no illusion about the stiff competition he will be up against.
“I’m really going to enjoy the week and hopefully make the cut, if I can do that, he goal would be to push towards the top 12 which gets you an invite for next year,” Stubbs said.
Stubbs began his golfing journey at the Bairnsdale Golf Club prior to moving to Melbourne to chase his golf dream.
